Canadian Jewish Heritage Month was given Royal Assent in the Senate of Canada on March 29, 2018. This legislation recognizes that “the month of May is meaningful for the Jewish community around the world” and designates the month as a time “to recognize the important contributions that Jewish Canadians have made to Canada’s social, economic, political and cultural fabric […] to remember, celebrate and educate future generations about the inspirational role that Jewish Canadians have played, and continue to play, in communities across the country.”
Canada is home to the fourth largest Jewish population in the world. There are close to 400,000 Jewish residents in Canada and almost half of that number resides in Ontario. Jewish settlers in Canada can be traced as far back as 1760. Jewish Canadians have proudly contributed to Canadian heritage in all of its facets including the military, the arts, government, business, academia, law, medicine, culture, and sports. Throughout the month of May, we celebrate the contributions Jewish Canadians make to our great country and our great province.

At YRDSB, we are committed to improving the well-being and achievement for all our students through engaging, equitable and inclusive learning environments, as well as curriculum and culturally relevant pedagogical opportunities.

The South Asian Heritage Act of 2001 established the foundation upon which South Asians, whose origins are or can be traced to the Indian subcontinent, can see themselves reflected in the fabric of Ontario and our schools.

In May 2002, The Government of Canada signed an official declaration to designate May as Asian Heritage Month. This acknowledges the long and rich history of Asian Canadians from East Asia, Southern Asia, Western and Southeast Asia and their contributions to Canada. It also provides an opportunity for Canadians across the country to reflect and celebrate the contributions of Canadians of Asian heritage towards the growth and prosperity of Canada.

As we approach the month of May, staff and students and families are encouraged to join Ontarians and Canadians who will be coming together to celebrate the rich and vibrant heritage of people of Asian and South Asian descent.

Mental Health WeekMental Health Week - Canadian Mental Health Association

May 4 to 10, 2020 marks the annual CMHA Mental Health Week. Especially this year, we need to pay attention to our mental health. All 5 in 5 of us have mental health, just like we all have physical health. Unfortunately, in any given year, 1 in 5 of us will also personally experience a mental illness. The COVID-19 pandemic and resulting changes to social interaction and health services is testing our personal resilience and coping strategies.

This year’s Canadian Mental Health Association campaign challenges us to not only #GetLoud about mental health, but also to #GetReal. We encourage you to visit these resources to support your own mental health:

 ComPsych Mental Health Awareness Toolkit

The Canadian Mental Health Association has just launched a brand

In an effort keep our students connected and feel a sense of “normalcy” during these trying times, Beckett Farm PS has created a BFPS Announcements Website  where students (and families:) can access announcements, activities such as Mindful Moments, Jokes of the day, Tips and Tricks, Useful links, and other relevant information to help our scholars stay connected!

If you haven’t already done so, please encourage your children to visit this site.

***NOTE: Students must be logged into their GAPPS account in order to login.

Please complete this very brief Survey to let us know if your children have visited the website and provide any other feedback.  We would like to make this site as valuable for our scholars as we can.

Thank you!!
